Windows: Slow Performance. Windows Update (svchost.exe) consumes high CPU load

Hi,

older Windows Versions i.e 7, 8.1 and Server 2012R2 have the problems that an older Version of the Windows Update Agent is installed which consumes a lot of CPU cycles.

Two Updates are available to fix this issues:

  • KB3177467 – Updates the Windows Servcing Stack
  • KB3172605 – UpdateRollup. This brings a newer Version of the Windows Update Agent

Install it in the order listet above.

Before installing KB3172605 check if Windows Update has the latest Version. Latest Version are (31/01/2017)

Windows 7: 7.6.7601.23453

Windows 8.1 and Server 2012R2 : 7.9.9600.18340

D:\> (Get-Item C:\Windows\System32\wuauclt.exe|select-object VersionInfo).VersionInfo.FileVersion
7.6.7601.23453 (win7sp1_ldr.160513-1233)

The more importent file to check is C:\Windows\System32\wuaueng.dll but on Windows 8.1 powershell (17489) and explorer (18340) show different versions on the same file – strange.

If you have these versions are higher ones, no update is requiered.
